Communicating Risk and Uncertainty
 
We are faced with claims of both a reproducibility crisis in scientific publication, and of a ‘post-truth’ society in which emotional responses dominate over balanced consideration of evidence.   This presents a strong challenge to those who value quantitative and scientific evidence: how can we communicate risks and unavoidable scientific uncertainty in a transparent and trustworthy way?

Appropriate communication of established risks has been well-studied, leading to recommendations for using an expected frequency format.  But deeper uncertainty about facts, numbers, or scientific hypotheses needs to be communicated without losing trust and credibility. This is an empirically researchable issue, and I shall describe some current randomised experiments concerning the impact on audiences of alternative verbal, numerical and graphical means of communicating uncertainty.  

Available evidence may often not permit a quantitative assessment of uncertainty, and I will also examine scales being used by ‘What Works’ centres and other agencies to summarise degrees of ‘confidence’ in conclusions, in terms of the quality of the research underlying the whole assessment.

デビッド・シュピーゲルハルター卿は、ケンブリッジ大学にあるウィントン財団が、医療の専門家、患者、法律家、マスメディア、政策立案者によって用いられる統計的なエビデンスに関わる方法を改善することを目的として設立したリスクとコミュニケーションにおけるエビデンスのセンター長を務める教授です。リスクに関するコミュニケーションについて様々な組織や政府機関のアドバイザーであり、特に不確かなことを伝える場面において統計的な問題についてマスコミのレギュラーコメンテーターでもあります。

医学統計、特に臨床試験、医療技術評価、薬剤の安全性におけるベイズ手法の利用につい専門的に研究をされ、200以上の査読付き論文、(Michael Blastland氏と共著の)Norm Chronicles、Sex by Numbers（日本語訳：統計学はときにセクシーな学問である）、The Art of Statisticsの著作とともに共著で6つの教科書があります。マスメディアでも活躍され、BBC4のドキュメンタリーTails you Win: the Science of Chance、受賞の輝いたClimate Change by Numbers、2011年にBBC1のでAn Episode of Winter Wipeoutの第7回に登場しました。

2005年に王立協会の評議員に選ばれ、2014年には医学統計への貢献で大英帝国二等勲爵士、いわゆるナイトの称号を授与されてSirの称号が付きました。また、昨年まで2年間王立統計協会の会長も務められました。
