2007 The Deming Prize Award Ceremony


 
 

2007 The Deming Prize Award Ceremony was held at the Keidanren Kaikan in Otemachi, Tokyo in November 14, 2007. Brief introductions of the award winners are as follows.

 
 

The Japan Quality Medal


 
 

Mahindra & Mahindra Limited, Farm Equipment Sector (India)

The Farm Equipment Sector, FES, won the Deming Application Prize in 2003. Under the vision to become the world's largest tractor company by 2009, top managements and employees as well as suppliers/dealers united their efforts to promote TQM that is more closely attached to the company management. FES also achieved to develop products with global competitiveness. Such outstanding accomplishments were highly evaluated resulting in winning the Japan Quality Medal.

 
 

The Deming Prize for Individuals


 
 

Mr. Masayoshi Ushikubo, Chairman, Sanden Corporation

After being appointed as director of Sanden Corporation, Mr. Ushikubo held important positions in the executive posts. While taking such key roles, Mr. Ushikubo taught the significance and effectiveness of TQM throughout Sanden and its group companies in and outside of Japan. As a result of Mr. Ushikubo's long term contribution in promoting and instructing TQM, Sanden Corporation won the Deming Application Prize in 1998 and the Japan Quality Medal in 2002. Moreover, 6 other group companies were awarded the Deming Application Prize between 2000 and 2007. The leadership displayed by Mr. Ushikubo received high recognition.

Asahi India Glass Limited, Auto Glass Division (India)

Asahi India Glass Limited, Auto Glass Division launched a TQM activity in 1997. The top management demonstrated outstanding leadership and foresight which realized the introduction, localization and self-manufacturing of Asahi Glass technology and know-how. The division also accomplished the enrichment of policy management and daily work management as well as the vitalization of the organization and improvement activity. High evaluation of the division due to the efforts mentioned and significant achievements made such as; reduction of nonconformance rate, boosting of yield ratio, increasing of sales, profits and shareholder's value.

 
 

 
 

Rane (Madras) Limited (India)

TQM was implemented in Rane (Madras) Limited in 2001 and its activity has been steadily practiced with the understanding of TQM fundamentals and methods. In order to achieve the management principles, Rane (Madras) Limited declared specific quality policy under which the customer orientation, prosperous coexistence with suppliers and full participation in quality-centered management were put into practice. Management performance took a firm step upwards which resulted in the high appraisal of the company.

 
 

The Quality Control Award for Operations Business Units


 
 

Reliance Industries Limited, Hazira Manufacturing Division (India)

The Hazira Manufacturing Division introduced TQM in 1994 holding a vision to enhance competitiveness with high quality products. Improvement activity was promoted by teams dividing the organization into three layers between managements and front line workers. This was led by a strong belief of a top executive which was to carry out the activity across the organization. The effects are remarkably visible in substantial rise of market quality, cost reduction, cutting down of energy consumption and productivity improvement. The division's distinguished achievements earned great evaluation.

 
 

 
 

Winners expressed full of the joy in their remarks following the award presentation. Mr. Yasutaka Moriguchi, from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology also delivered a congratulatory address as a representative of the guest of honor.
