2009 The Deming Prize Award Ceremony

The Deming Prize Award Ceremony was held at the Keidanren Kaikan in Otemachi, Tokyo in November 11, 2009. Brief introduction of the award winners are as follows.



The Deming Prize for Individuals


Dr. Hiroshi Osada
Professor, Graduate School of Innovation Management
Tokyo Institute of Technology

A professor at the Graduate School of Innovation Management, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Dr. Osada is a great contributor to the TQM implementation and dissemination. Through the course of taking prominent positions in various organizations as mentioned below, Dr. Osada developed the process to identify the managerial challenges to formulate management strategy. By integrating this process with the policy management, he successfully established the new scheme called "Strategic Management by Policy (SMBP)" which enables to put the strategy into practice organizationally. Furthermore, Dr. Osada systemized the strategy planning method in a tool "Strategic Planning (S7)". Not only involving actively in the field of TQM, Dr. Osada also dedicated his effort to the theoretical studies such as the self-evaluation method of management system.
Dr. Osada's current and past positions include; outside-auditor of Sekisui Chemical Co., Ltd., committee chair of the JUSE Quality Management Level Research sponsored by Nikkei Inc., editorial committee chair of the Quality Management magazine, organizing committee member of the Quality Management Symposium, vice-chair of the Deming Application Prize Subcommittee, award committee chair of the Ookouchi Award, chair of the Japan MOT Society.


The Deming Distinguished Service Award for Dissemination and Promotion (Overseas)


Mr. Gregory H. Watson
President, International Academy for Quality (IAQ)
Chairman and Managing Partner, Business Excellence Solutions, Limited

Mr. Watson was appointed to the President of the International Academy for Quality in 2009 and is a Past-president and chairman of the American Society for Quality. In addition to the outstanding achievements worldwide, Mr. Watson has played an important role developing the Strategic Benchmarking, combining with Japanese Policy Management, and disseminating and promoting strategic approach by quality. Moreover, he served as a bridge between Japan and the West and contributed to enhance the global presence of Japan.





The Deming Application Prize


Niigata Diamond Electric Co., Ltd. (Japan)

In 1989, 5 years after the foundation of the company, Niigata Diamond Electric implemented TQC and continued to put effort with an aim to realize Quality Management through practicing Policy Management and QC Circle activities. Following the business expansion came in late 1990's, Niigata Diamond Electric introduced ISO9000, TPM, and Toyota Production System to build up the organization. In 2006, the company declared "TQM Enhancement" in an attempt to further strengthen its management as well as to establish firm self-supporting environment. As a result of ceaseless endeavors, Niigata Diamond Electric has achieved outstanding results such as establishing refined Policy Management, new product development, better quality management structure, efficient production system, and higher problem solving ability. Among all, the company attached great importance to the human resource development and to train young executives.


The Siam White Cement Company Limited (Thailand)

The Siam White Cement (SWC, hereafter) lead flexible management which enabled the company to be adaptive to the changing business environment by practicing TQM and selling applied product. As a result, SWC made a remarkable outcome in terms of sales, profit, community satisfaction, safety, and environment. SWC's branding strategy is especially notable which aims to gain the recognition of its brand by proactively presenting and appealing the utility of applied products as well as its potential usages to the client, building designer, and construction agent. Despite the risk of overproduction or price competition due to having competitors that have similar performance, SWC has successfully established favorable brand image, increased sales and market share. Such organization-wide effort to build strong brand at SWC received high recognition.


Winners expressed full of joy in their remarks. As the representative of the guest of honor, congratulatory address was delivered by Mr. Masaharu Nakagawa, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Technology of Japan. We wish the prosperous future to all the winners.
